Winter residency 2024
The Silence Organisation in Kittilä is launching a winter residency that will take place from February until April 2024. The application is open from 26th October to 30th November 2023.
The residency is aimed primarily at music professionals who would not otherwise have the opportunity to focus on their own art in the snowy surroundings of Lapland. The residency is also open to other arts practitioners who do not require a rehearsal hall.
ART DISCIPLINES
The Silence Winter Residency is a multidisciplinary and international artist residency, to which artists can apply individually.
The residency is not restricted to any particular art discipline, but is primarily intended to support work focused on musical composition, musicians working with portable instruments, the writing and planning phase of performing arts and multidisciplinary collaboration.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Application is via an open call. Unlike the summer residence, to which working groups can apply, the winter residence is only offered to individuals. If you wish to work as a pair or in a group, you may request a simultaneous working period with another artist, but each artist must make their own personal application. A maximum of 3 artists can work at the same time in the residency.
The residency takes place between 5th February 2024 and 14th April 2024.
The application period starts on 26th October 2023 and ends on 30th November 2023. Decisions will be made by 10 December 2023.
We encourage artists to apply for the residency with their family if it supports their own work and feels easier to combine artistic work and family. By family we mean the artist's spouse/partner and children. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow pets in the residence..
We expect the artists-in-residence to participate in remote meetings with other winter residency artists on two occasions between February and April and to provide a short written description of their work at the winter residency.
The application should include the artist's biography, work plan, desired time period for the residency and information about possible funding already granted for the work.
The residency is free of charge for selected participants. The Silence Organisation does not cover the travel expenses of residency artists.
selection
Artists selected for the residency will be announced on 11th December 2023. All applicants will be contacted personally.
For 2024, at least 8 artists will be selected for the winter residency. We hope that at least 2 of the selected artists will stay in the residency with their families.
Selections are primarily guided by matching the applicant's needs with the facilities offered by the winter residency. Providing equal opportunities for young, novice art professionals as well as more experienced artists will be a factor in decision-making.
Interdisciplinary work is encouraged as are projects testing the boundaries of established performing arts. The residency aims to provide a wintery northern working environment for those artists who would otherwise not have the opportunity.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & ACCOMMODATION
The winter residency offers accommodation and working space for 1-2 weeks at a time, depending on applications.
The residence takes place in a private 3 bedroom house in the village of Kaukonen called Syrjälä. Each bedroom is suitable for a maximum of 2 people . In addition to the bedrooms artists have access to the following spaces and facilities that are shared with other artists in the house: living room, kitchen, toilet, shower, sauna, washing machine, a couple of desks and an internet connection. Bedding and linen is provided.
Work takes place in your private rooms as well as shared areas. The winter residence does not offer a rehearsal hall or separate working spaces outside of the house.
If necessary, transportation and additional accommodation can be arranged for a small additional fee.
The residence period is during the snowiest and coldest months of winter, which makes it possible to enjoy Lapland’s nature and winter outdoor activities alongside working.
Pilot residency
The trial period of the first year of the Winter Residency of Silence is supported by Arts Promotion (Taike) with its special grant for cultural activities in sparsely populated rural areas (HAMA).
Continuation of the winter residency after 2024 will depend on funding received by The Silence Organisation and the feedback collected from the residency artists.
